The social housing sector is a large consumer of electricity, natural gas, water, and materials. In fact, the sector spends approximately $400 million a year on utilities. It is by far the largest controllable cost within social housing.
The social housing community has the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in this area, not only by introducing technical changes to their buildings, but also by changing attitudes and behaviours. This Toolbox will focus on no-cost and low-cost solutions, making it easy for you to engage your staff and residents in conservation activites, and run a more profitable and sustainable business.
This first edition of the GLOBE Sustainability Toolbox is FREE and divided into three distinct sections:
Module 1 – Sustainability: An Overview
In this section, you’ll get an overview of sustainability, what is meant by the term and how to benefit through its application to your portfolio. GLOBE’s Sustainability Toolbox describes some of the ways that society, economy and the environment are impacted by our choices and provides ideas on how to assess opportunities and improvements to your operations and the health and well being of residents and staff.
Module 2 – Building-as-a-System
This section demonstrates how different aspects of your building work together to impact water and energy use, waste management, costs and health and comfort.
GLOBE’s Sustainability Toolbox gives you some simple, low-cost changes that you and your residents can make to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of your operations. Examples and case studies from the social housing sector are given to assist you in motivating, planning, and implementing improvements in your portfolio.
Module 3 – Developing a Green Office Program
GLOBE’s Sustainability Toolbox lists six easy steps that you can take to create a culture of conservation in your office. This section describes how you can improve your bottom line by encouraging sustainable choices, habits and attitudes in your staff. By implementing many of the tips and processes suggested in this section, you will give your staff hands-on experience, demonstrate real leadership, and show residents that you “walk the talk”.
